Creative Commons, some Vids and my project.

After the new year I have a project that is going live. This project is a video for Creative Commons. This video will be made so that children can understand what CC is all about. It is based on a slide show based on this slide show. I will be narrating myself and hope to have it out before the end of January. For those of you that have no idea what CC is just check out the vids below

Minimo DOES work on Nokia's n770

Me and a buddy of mine (twitter: @sysnerd) were hacking on my n770 trying to get minimo running. The issue was this...

* You install it from the apt frontend (can't remember what is called)
* it installs in the extra menu
* you go to run it and it does nothing

Now here is the issue... The run script is a bash script but they have it trying to run as a c shell. This will not work, it's like a Frenchmen trying to explain string theory to a deaf German, not good.

To fix this you have to

* have xterm (its in the apt frontend)
* cd to /usr/bin/
* open a text editor, we used vi
* and edit the top line of the script to read #bash/usr/bin
* save and close

thats it,

Happy Hacking

So my mom gave in and so here I am blogging from my n770. The only thing that is pissing me off right now is the update button on twitter.com is not wotking, so I avent yet tweeted from it. You have to take the good with bad I guess: the RIAA and NASA

This is probablynot news to anyone but the RIAA hates you. Arstechnica is reporting today that 'Those MP3 and AAC files that you've ripped from your CD collection are still "unauthorized copies" in the eyes of the recording industry. In a brief filed late last week, the RIAA said that the MP3 files on a PC owned by a file-sharing defendant who had admitted to ripping them himself were "unauthorized copies." ' HUH? you mean the disc that I bought that contained no User Agreement, and no copy protection was not really mine. So that means when I was in high school and had $500 worth the CDs stolen out of my car, that they should have replaced them for me. Well I'd like to speak to a manager please.

"When asked by the RIAA's lead counsel whether it was wrong for consumers to make copies of CDs they have purchased, Jennifer Pariser replied in the negative. "When an individual makes a copy of a song for himself, I suppose we can say he stole a song," said Pariser. Making "a copy" of a song you own is just "a nice way of saying 'steals just one copy'," according to Pariser." OMG your bastards.

The line I like best is "I suppose we can say he stole a song" IF your going to call us thieves, then do it, but don't patronize us.

Now on to the Good:

The space shuttle Atlantis was attacked by a giant spider. Well, that's what it looked like on NASA TV, as an "evil space spider" walked right over a live picture of the launch pad.

see it here

And now a special note to local6.com, Why do you make it so bloody hard to embed video. That is why I didn't credit you for the video above, if you want a plug don't be a knobjockey.

Freedom Hater of the Day: Nokia

ARSTechnica posted today that Nokia is upset with the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) because they want to include both OGG Vorbis and Therora in the HTML5 Spec.

Why I Didn't I hear about this sooner? OGG on the web w00000000000000tzzz!!!!111one.

But Nokia had a List of issues, I answered this list of on Digg and figured that you all should see it too.

So with out Further adieu, My Rebuttal: A Rope of Sand:

1. W3C shouldn't make any standards relating to codecs. Leave that to other standards bodies like ITU-T and ISO/IEC.

*But the W3C is the standards body for the web not ITU-T and ISO/IEC, those 2 have no "jurisdiction" (I guess that word will do)

2. There are over a billion PCs in the world today, many connected to the web, but these numbers are tiny compared to traditional video playback devices like DVD players.

*DVD players have nothing to do with the web.

3. This industry is used to paying license fees and royalties for video codecs like MPEG-2.

* yeah and I'm sure they would be heartbroken to save money

4. This industry is used to making money, and it doesn't care about keeping things free.

*Free Software refers to freedom, not money. Think Free Speech, not Free Beer.

5. Web codec standards should be either free or low-cost to implement.

*see number 3

6. Web codec standards should support DRM to placate Hollywood, but DRM implementations should be optional.

*there hasn't been DRM on the Web so far (that I know of), and if they wanted to, the spec is in the Public Domian http://www.vorbis.com/faq/

7. H.264 for video and AAC for audio would be Nokia's recommendations for codecs.

*what in the hell do they have against Linux. If you standardize on those two the web will suck for Free Software fans for at least the next two years. x.264 is fairly stable and complete, but I don't about AAC

Remembering James Kim

I remember this time last year and the search for James Kim. I remember hearing all of his close friends and colleagues in their attempts to cover the story without bursting into tears. I remember sitting on the bus (in tears) at the obvious pain that everyone was going through. I remember watching James on TechTV and was glad to see him working at CNET after TechTV was disbanded. And to hear of his passing is a heavy on the hearts of all tech lovers.

Below you will find the video and the full text of the article that was put up on Crave.

"One year ago today, we learned of the death of our dear friend and colleague, James Kim. James was, both at work and at home, a kind, intelligent, exuberant presence. We miss him very much.

To keep James' memory alive, we want to revisit the video tribute we created when we first heard the news. We hope you enjoy these video clips from CNET.com and Crave as much as we have.

In his honor, James' family and friends have established the James Kim Technology Foundation (JKTF). The foundation provides San Francisco public schools, and the children who attend them, access to emerging technologies like the ones James covered every day for CNET.com and Crave. You can learn more about JKTF at the foundation's Web site."

DMCA idiocy slideshow: explaining the DMCA to info-civilians

I found this posting by Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing, check it out!

Wellington Grey has a great little slideshow about the idiocy of the DMCA's "anti-circumvention" measures, which prohibit breaking the digital locks off the stuff you own. In it, Grey recounts how offended he was when he bought a TomTom GPS that came with a CD in a sealed envelope, the seal on which read, "By breaking this seal, you agree to our contract," but the contract itself was on the CD, behind the seal. In other words, the CD said, "By breaking this seal, you agree to a bunch of secret stuff."

DRM and trying to explain it to those who have no clue

A couple of moths ago I was stopped by a wal*martian who was asking about the sticker that was on my iPod. The sticker reads "WARNING DRM Product restricts usage or invades privacy. DefectiveByDesign.org". I had no idea how to explain it to them. I stumbled through with a terrible example and left briskly feeling like a loser, and ultimately a failure.

How do you describe DRM? That's like going give me a definition of Evil, or what is air? So I started looking for talking points or some help on educating people. And I have to say that I came up fairly dry.

I think I'm okay arguing with people who know about it and are just on the wrong side, but when it comes to the unwashed masses I have no clue. I really wish someone like Cory Doctorow would write a "how to teach the unteachable about evil and DRM" (Cory feel free to use that title;) )

please post ideas in the comments

RE: Bring. It. On.

Jono posted this at his blog
Everyone has a list of bands that they wish they got to see, but never did. One such band on my list is Carcass, one of the first death metal bands I ever heard, and a huge inspiration for my own music. Well, metal-fans, good news:

Legendary British death metal band, CARCASS, will reunite for next year’s Wacken Open Air festival. Bassist/vocalist, Jeff Walker, issued the following statement on behalf of the band:

“Well, they said it would never happen. In fact I said it would never happen. Then I noticed no one pays attention to what I say anyway and I sounded like an idiot…

“Myself, Jeff Walker, on bass and vocals, ‘the semi-legendary’ Bill Steer and Mike Amott on lead guitar and Daniel Erlandsson (ARCH ENEMY), filling in for Ken on drums, look forwards to mutilating your hearing”.

Bring. It. On. :)

So Jono here is my list:

Bob Marley and the Wailers - Bob was dead before I started listening to them
Sublime - Bradley was dead before I started Listening to them
Nirvana - Didn't have a chance to see them before Kurt died
John Lennon- Dead before I was born
Dead Kennedys - Break up and Lawsuit happened before I started listening to them

Hot Damn gTwitter made it into universe!

I love gTwitter, there is no question about that, none. But you used to have to either compile it from source or go to getdeb.net to find a package for it. That was the past and this is the future!! I love when someone actually goes and packages my favorite apps.

403'ed on Updates WTF?!?

I just tried to get the important security updates to Samba and I just got 403'ed, no shit.

Pics or it didn't happen you say, well here you go

again WTF

**UPDATE**

They are working on it... the "...packages have been disabled due to a regression." "Turns out there were more problems with the patch and all releases have been disabled. Updated packages for Dapper, Edgy, Feisty and Gutsy will be provided soon." --Jamie Strandboge

There is a lively discussion on Launchpad (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+bug/163116)

And please for the love of [insert deity here (if applicable)] do not go on #ubuntu and ask about this they will tell you !sambabug. And then ubotu will say "A defect has been identified in a recent security update and as a result the associated packages have been taken offline. Please disregard any 403 errors you may receive when trying to apply updates. They will disappear once this problem is resolved." and that is it.

**ANOTHER UPDATE**
It's all good now, updates are working now.

5 easy steps to a romantic evening

Tonight I set up a fairly nice dinner for my girlfriend, it was a kinda spur-of-the-moment type of thing. So I figured that I would give everyone the benefit of what I learned.

Step 1: Clean up

Not take a shower you wanker, she really doesn't care if you a days grime on you. (note any more than one day does require a bath) but clean up the immediate area around where you will eat. Anyone that knows me in meatspace knows that my place is a constant wreak. One good thing about a messy house is a clean spot looks like an oasis.

Step 2: Candles

Candles will make that clean spot more of an oasis. Just turn off all the lights and she'll just gravitate to it

Step 3: Food

Food is the least of your issues. Any food will do, my last romantic evening (the one being discussed here) was honey buffalo wings and steak fries. Not a big deal.

Step 4: Wine

Vino is not necessary but hell get her drunk. Even bad wine will do. I had my first just off the shelf buy a bottle, take it home, and hope is doesn't taste like ass. Well that didn't go so well you can read my review of the wine at cork'd (friend me up!)

Step 5: Music

Music is another easy one, just join last.fm. With that you don't have to own shite for music. Here is what I did. I went to last.fm and just played any music tagged "jazz", you can choose music by artist, genre, or just what it was tagged (so web 2.0!). And it worked there was even this Nora Jones track that we both dugg. (BTW friend me up here also)

Girlfriend v7.0 vs. Wife v1.0

I found this joke , and thought it was pretty funny the only problem was that it was written for a Windows/Non-Free audience. So I re-tooled it to be Free Software friendly. I also tried to make it more bug-report-esqe, so here is.
Package: Wife
Version: 1.0

Last year I upgraded from Girlfriend 7.0.5.3 to Wife 1.0. I soon noticed that the new program began unexpected child processing that took up a lot of space, swap, and other valuable resources.

In addition, Wife 1.0 installed itself into all other programs and now monitors all other system activity. Applications such as Poker Night 10.3.6 , Football 5.0.42 , Hunting and Fishing 7.5.9.4 , and Racing 3.6.5

I can’t seem to keep Wife 1.0 in the background while attempting to run my favorite applications. I’m thinking about going back to Girlfriend 7.0.5.3 , but the shell script to uninstall doesn’t work on Wife 1.0 . Please help!

Thanks,
Troubled User…..

Troubled User:

This is a very common problem that men complain about.

Many people upgrade from Girlfriend 7.0.5.3 to Wife 1.0, thinking that it is just a Utilities and Entertainment program. Wife 1.0 is an OPERATING SYSTEM and is designed by the contributors to run EVERYTHING !!! It is also impossible to delete Wife 1.0 and to return to Girlfriend 7.0.5.3 . It is impossible to uninstall, or purge the program files from the system once installed.

You cannot go back to Girlfriend 7.0.5.3 because Wife 1.0 is designed to not allow this. Try running "man Wife 1.0" and looking under Warnings-Alimony/Child Support . I recommend that you keep Wife 1.0 and work on improving the situation. I suggest compiling the plug-in "Yes Dear" to alleviate software augmentation.

The best course of action is to enter the command "sh /usr/bin/apologize.sh" because ultimately you will have to give the APOLOGIZE command before the system will return to normal anyway.

Wife 1.0 is a great project, but it tends to be very high maintenance. Wife 1.0 comes with several support programs, such as Clean and Sweep 3.2.7 , Cook It 1.5.6b and Do Bills 4.2.8 .

However, be very careful how you use these programs. Improper use will cause the system to launch the program Nag 9.5.2. Once this happens, the only way to improve the performance of Wife 1.0 is to compile additional software. I recommend Flowers 2.1.5 and Diamonds 5.0 !

WARNING!!! DO NOT, under any circumstances, install Secretary With Short Skirt 3.3 . This package is not supported by Wife 1.0 and will cause irreversible damage to the operating system!

Best of luck,

The Wife Team

Mandriva's François Bancilhon and his weeny Letter to Steve Balmer

Ok assuming that François sent this to Steve it's ballsy, a little weeny but ballsy. After I repost his letter for you all to read, I'll rewrite it to reflect what I would have said.

Dear Steve,

Hi, this is François, from Mandriva.

I’m sure we’re way too small for you to know me. You know, we’re one of these tiny Linux company working hard for our place on the market. We produce a Linux Distro, Mandriva Linux. The last edition, Mandriva 2008 was seen as a pretty good version and we’re proud of it. You should give it a spin, I’m sure you’d like it. We also happen to be one of the Linux companies that did not sign an agreement with your company (nobody’s perfect).

We recently closed a deal with the Nigerian Government. Maybe you heard about it, Steve. They were looking for an affordable hardware+software solution for their schools. The initial batch was 17,000 machines. We had a good answer to their need: the Classmate PC from Intel, with a customized Mandriva Linux solution. We presented the solution to the local government, they liked the machine, they liked our system, they liked what we offered them, the fact that it was open, that we could customize it for their country and so on.

Then your people entered the game and the deal got more competitive. I would not say it got dirty, but someone could have said that. They fought and fought the deal, but still the customer was happy to get CMPC and Mandriva.

So we closed the deal, we got the order, we qualified the software, we got the machine shipped. In other word, we did our job. I understand the machine are being delivered right now.

And then, today, we hear from the customer a totally different story: “we shall pay for the Mandriva Software as agreed, but we shall replace it by Windows afterward.”

Wow! I’m impressed, Steve! What have you done for these guys to change their mind like this? It’s pretty clear to me, and it will be clear to everyone. How do you call what you just did Steve, in the place where you live? In my place, they give it various names, I’m sure you know them.

Hey Steve, how do you feel looking at yourself in the mirror in the morning?

Of course, I will keep fighting this one and the next one, and the next one. You have the money, the power, and maybe we have a different sense of ethics you and I, but I believe that hard work, good technology and ethics can win too.

cheers

François

PS: a message to our friends in Nigeria: it’s still time to do the right thing and make the right choice, you will get lots of support for it and excellent services!

Now here is how I would have went about it...

Dear Steve:

You rat bastard. What in the hell do you think you are doing! Look, once a deal is made you don't go and make another deal behind the scenes. What did you tell them that they would have to pay you anyway because of some bullshit patient. The last thing that CHILDREN need is for some "adult" to be making threats to their school. Schools need to be free to share and help others. What are they supposed to tell those children, "you need to share your toys, snacks, etc., but don't share software because if you do you are going to be sued." Great message dickwad.

Cheers,
threethirty

OSI Approves Microsoft License Submissions

Via OpenSource.Org:
The OSI Board today approved the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) and the Microsoft Reciprocal License (Ms-RL). The decision to approve was informed by the overwhelming (though not unanimous) consensus from the open source community that these licenses satisfied the 10 criteria of the Open Source definition, and should therefore be approved.

The formal evaluation of these licenses began in August and the discussion of these licenses was vigorous and thorough. The community raised questions that Microsoft (and others) answered; they raised issues that, when germane to the licenses in question, Microsoft addressed. Microsoft came to the OSI and submitted their licenses according to the published policies and procedures that dozens of other parties have followed over the years. Microsoft didn't ask for special treatment, and didn't receive any. In spite of recent negative interactions between Microsoft and the open source community, the spirit of the dialogue was constructive and we hope that carries forward to a constructive outcome as well.

The Open Source Initiative is best known as the steward of the Open Source Definition and for its license review process. But, an open source license is just the starting point. Open source depends upon code (which can be made better), community (which can be made larger), and ultimately a commitment to the idea that the more free the market is for innovation, the more innovation the market can deliver.

Every approval that OSI issues represents our community's demand for more open-source code, a larger and more vital open-source community, and all the benefits open source brings to innovation in a free market. The new Ms-PL and Ms-RL are no exceptions.

From what I have read from these licenses they seem to be very forward thinking for Microsoft. I'm no sure how this will keep Steve "Monkey-Boy" Balmer from running his trap about Linux and other FOSS projects but maybe this can be a new era for Microsoft. I plan to keep microsuck.com in the bookmarks just in case though

Here we go again

This is looking like SCO 2.0, from Ars,
Patent holding company IP Innovation has filed a patent infringement suit against Linux distributors Novell and Red Hat. The patent, which describes a "user interface with multiple workspaces for sharing display system objects," dates back to 1987 and originated in Xerox's PARC labs.

IP Innovation seeks damages and injunctive relief. "Red Hat's and Novell's infringement, contributory infringement and inducement to infringe has injured Plaintiffs and Plaintiffs are entitled to recover damages adequate to compensate them for such infringement, but in no event less than a reasonable royalty," reads the complaint.

The Linux vendors aren't the only companies that have been on the receiving end of lawsuits for allegedly infringing this particular user interface patent. In April, IP Innovation sued Apple and demanded $20 million in damages. Apple eventually settled with the company for an undisclosed amount.

IP Innovation, which is a subsidiary of the Acacia Research Corporation, develops no products of its own. Acacia owns over 140 patents in 38 separate categories, accumulating patents and generating all of its revenue from licensing and litigation. Such companies are generally referred to as "patent trolls" because the manner in which they take advantage of the patent system is broadly considered detrimental to innovation.

Many companies that invest heavily in Linux development have long anticipated patent threats against the operating system, but the defensive measures in place might not be enough to stop this threat. Consider, for instance, the Open Invention Network (OIN), which was originally devised to deter patent litigation by establishing a vehicle for severe retaliation. As critics of the OIN have pointed out in the past, a defensive patent portfolio doesn't provide protection from companies that do not develop products because there is no basis on which to sue them. The OIN's powerful patent portfolio cannot be used to force IP Innovation into a cross-licensing agreement because IP Innovation has no need to license the patents held by others.

I just had to defend the CC-BY-SA

I just sent a lengthy email into the Debian bug tracking system. I originally tried to send it directly to the developers through an already "closed" bug (which was returned undeliverable) so I sent it again to submit@bugs.debian.org. I sent it with the proper headings (I hope) so that it would get to the developers. the subject was "VRMS-Why is the Tango Icon theme listed as non-free", and the project in question is vrms or (Virtual Richard M. Stallman) which is a program that will analyze the set of currently-installed packages on a Debian-based system, and report all of the packages from the non-free tree which are currently installed. So here is my mail (in full) for all to enjoy...

Package: vrms
Version:
Hello:

I was looking at the change log for vrms 1.13, and can't understand why this is listed as non-free. It is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.5 Generic license. Which allows users to copy, distribute and transmit the work. As well as to adapt the work. (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/)

Now let's look at that in reference to the 4 freedoms as put forth by the FSF...

Free software is a matter of the users' freedom to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. More precisely, it refers to four kinds of freedom, for the users of the software:

*The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).

This is implied you kind of have me there.

*The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

You are free to Remix — to adapt the work

*The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).

You are free to Share — to copy, distribute and transmit the work

* The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Share Alike. If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same or similar license to this one.

Ok now for some snippets that I couldn't fit into the model above:

(from the Free Software Definition)
"However, certain kinds of rules about the manner of distributing free software are acceptable, when they don't conflict with the central freedoms. For example, copyleft (very simply stated) is the rule that when redistributing the program, you cannot add restrictions to deny other people the central freedoms. This rule does not conflict with the central freedoms; rather it protects them."

This is exactly like the share-alike clause.

(from GPLv3 [http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/gpl.html])
"For the developers' and authors' protection, the GPL clearly explains that there is no warranty for this free software. For both users' and authors' sake, the GPL requires that modified versions be marked as changed, so that their problems will not be attributed erroneously to authors of previous versions."

This is exactly like the attribution clause.

Here is a little bit from "Various Licenses and Comments about Them" (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/license-list.html)

Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 license (a.k.a. CC-BY)

This is a non-copyleft free license that is good for art [see that] and entertainment works, and educational works. Please don't use it for software or documentation, since it is incompatible with the GNU GPL and with the GNU FDL.

Creative Commons publishes many licenses which are very different. Therefore, to say that a work “uses a Creative Commons license” is to leave the principal questions about the work's licensing unanswered. When you see such a statement in a work, please ask the author to highlight the substance of the license choices. And if someone proposes to “use a Creative Commons license” for a certain work, it is vital to ask immediately, “Which one?” [good point, for another discussion]

Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 2.0 license (a.k.a. CC-BY-SA)

This is a copyleft free license that is good for artistic [again talking about art] and entertainment works, and educational works. Please don't use it for software or documentation, since it is incompatible with the GNU GPL and with the GNU FDL.

Please see additional comments about Creative Commons licenses just above.

I think that it is a little unfair to call something non-free that is licensed under such a free license. The CC-attribution, share alike is almost exactly the GPL. The only issue I see is there is no source code for an image, but you are given the freedom to "remix" it as you like. There is nothing stopping you from retaining all of your freedoms, and the FSF itself says that it's okay for art and icon are art, so please remove this from the list.

Thank you for your time,

three

Graffiti FTW!

Well Mousekateers I have a funny and uplifting story about how direct action and graffiti was used for the public good. I have been a graffiti artist for quite a while and I believe that it can be a powerful way to send a message. Let me tell you a story...

About a month ago a gas station that I frequent removed the condom machines from the bathroom. Knowing that the last thing we needed was to make it harder or embarrassing to get condoms I wrote in black permanent marker "WTF no condoms, well I guess I'll go and spread AIDS then". Well I went back in there tonight and there is a big poster sized advert for Durex that said something along the lines of "We're there when you need us." Score one for Graffiti

How Much do you love freedom?

My brother and I were discussing Software Freedom, well I was being a zealot and he was being somewhat intelligent in his discussion. After this discussion I got a message on facebook telling me to install a thing called vrms. So I did. For those of you who don't know,

vrms (Virtual Richard M. Stallman) is a program that will analyze the set of currently-installed packages on a Debian-based system, and report all of the packages from the non-free tree which are currently installed.

Note that vrms is not limited to Debian systems only (which means that it also works with Debian-derived distributions such as Ubuntu). It is also not limited to Linux-based systems.

Future versions of vrms will include an option to also display text from the public writings of RMS and others that explain why use of each of the installed non-free packages might cause moral issues for some in the Free Software community. This functionality is not yet included.
(via wikipedia)

so here is the output on my Gutsy Beta box:

Gutsy Countdown

This is really exciting and really scary at the same time. GNOME 2.20 is sweet there is no doubt about that, but the rest of the stuff is really buggy. Here is a list of stuff that has happened in no particular order:

*the bottom bar doesn't show up when you first boot
*the added effects manager or the other effects crash the system
*everything seems really touchy

I know not a "definitive list of why it shouldn't ship", but I'm still worried. Not for the people like me who are going to install it regardless and say that it's better than having to run Slackware from 6 years ago, but it's not even as ready as the Feisty Alphas were. I'm running the Beta and it's like Microsoft beta quality not Free Software Beta quality.

I'm also working on my thoughts of Ohio Linux Fest 2007 and hope to have that posted soon

Tumbl and Stumble for the week of 9-22/9-28

Another week, another Tumbl and Stumble. I just recently figured out that I could link from tumblr so that's what I have done. I know that doesn't make this too interesting but doing it the way I did last week takes FOREVER!!! So let's get into it...

A discussion between Al00 and myself on #ubuntu on freenode
Al00 to channel: g'day folks -- I have a fairly simple question (at least in my fragile mind): Is it possible to attach a sound to the window minimize and maximize events? (kinda like winbloze)

threethirty to Al00: Al00: thats a wicked idea!!, but I don't think anyone has done it yet. What you should do is find the compiz fusion dev mailing list and ask for it\

Al00 to threethirty: threethirty: thanks -- I am using compiz fusion and thought it would be kick-ass if I could get a nice swooshing sound for minimizing :)

Al00 to threethirty: threethirty: compiz seems like overkill for this type of sound thing... it would be nice if it was just a std sound event gnome

threethirty to Al00: Al00: i knw but i fugured that the same people that put fish inside of a cube would be a little more willing to write that sort of thing

Al00 to threethirty: threethirty: LOL *high 5*

How old is movies piracy?

"60 Minutes" on Video Piracy - 1978

More bitching about the powers that be

I almost hate going to BoingBoing.net because I know without fail there will be something that throws me into a screaming rage with wordage that I almost can't use, even on the internets. If it's not Cory Doctorow talking about some freedom hating DRM thing or an anti consumer, anti pirating thing. It's shit like this...

State dept. won't say why UK music scholar is barred from US

Nalini Ghuman, a UK-born music professor at Mills College in Oakland, can't return to her home in the US, because the State Department revoked her visa and won't tell her or anyone else why.

In a written account of the next eight hours that she prepared for her lawyer, Ms. Ghuman said that officers tore up her H-1B visa, which was valid through May 2008, defaced her British passport, and seemed suspicious of everything from her music cassettes to the fact that she had listed Welsh as a language she speaks. A redacted government report about the episode obtained by her lawyer under the Freedom of Information Act erroneously described her as “Hispanic.”

Held incommunicado in a room in the airport, she was groped during a body search, she said, and was warned that if she moved, she would be considered to be attacking her armed female searcher. After questioning her for hours, the officers told her that she had been ruled inadmissible, she said, and threatened to transfer her to a detention center in Santa Clara, Calif., unless she left on a flight to London that night.

“They told me I was nobody, I was nowhere and I had no rights,” she said. “For the first time, I understood what the deprivation of liberty means.”

Apple put down that glass of hater-aid

Okay Steve listen up, YOU CAN'T STOP THE INEVITABLE! At what point did you think that a little sha checksum would stop us, the determined, the diligent, and the free? Ok you're trying to stop the same people that cracked DVD's (yes DVD John cracked CSS so that he could play DVD's on his Linux box), the same people who are reimplementing WindowsNT (check out ReactOS, it's finally getting places), and the same people who built the technology that your precious OSX is built on (Darwin is an off shoot of one of the various BSD's) . You silly. silly man. Thanks to the crew that code on GTKpod we now can use your freedom hating, DRM using, sickeningly trendy, digital music product. here is a little glimpse into the that triumphant moment

From #gtkpod today:
wtbw: okay guys
wtbw: i think we're done.
wtbw: let me code something just to check
[30 minutes later]
wtbw: can i hear a fuck yeah?
wtbw: works for both mine and xamphears :>

The Reason Why Ubuntu Wins Hardware Vendors' Polls

I was listening to the most recent Distrowatch OGGcast http://distrowatch.com/podcast/dww20070910.mp3
and the host brought up an interesting question, why does Ubuntu win all of the polls? Well here are my reasons why the next top competitors aren't on top.

Suse (SLED and OpenSUSE): No one trusts Novell. People tend to switch to Linux to get away from Microsoft, so why use a partner's distro?!?

Mandriva: I think Mandrivia is just crap, they focus way too much on the "club" (the tossers that actually pay for it) and don't focus enough on community building.

Debian: scary server OS

Fedora: I don't like Fedora. Okay scratch that, I hate RPM (RedHat Package Manager) . All Fedora needs is a new package manager (how about apt) and it would be fine. I would still reformat and put Ubuntu on, but Fedora may survive the first day.

Gentoo and Slackware: will never win because they are too damn difficult.

Mint Linux: may win the poll but will never come from the OEM because of the non-free codecs and shit they add (some illegally)

PCLinuxOS: name, the name sucks

Why didn't thins catch on?

Wang "Freestyle" videos from 1988

Youtube hates me and will not let me upload this video so there is the source where I saw it

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1373804178481058208

Wikipedia says that it failed because of cost and marketing, but why didn't someone else try it. This kind of tech is still not huge, and I don't really understand why.

Update: Screw you youtube, bastards

You'll never belive this shit, but I do: Cop gone wild- Lying and making threats just part of his job

This happened in a speed trap town in Missouri called St. George with only a few officers that think they have more power than they really do. This happened outside of their jurisdiction and they have no police powers where they stopped me.

The commuter lot is open 24 hours a day and can be confirmed by calling 1-888-Ask-MoDOT.

You'll hear this officer tell me he'll make up "9 different charges" including resisting arrest before he has even tried to arrest me. You'll hear him say how I didn't use my turn signal and I was weaving when the video clearly proves him wrong.

I truly thought if I didn't suck up, I would be beaten and maybe killed.

The person who posts this as that you please excuse the clicking in the video.

Video from Lug Radio Live 2007 is out

LugRadio Live 2007 saw hundreds of Linux and Free Software enthusiasts descend on the sunny city of Wolverhampton, UK. But with three talk venues, plus two BOF points and an exhibition there was no way one person could see everything that went on that weekend. Fortunately, thanks to the efforts of a small but dedicated crew (they need more people for 2008!) they can offer these videos of the talks you might just have missed.
HTTP downloads are available at http://2007.video.lugradio.org/

and torrents are available at http://forums.lugradio.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3622#p36696

There are such talks as:

I got stopped by a cop tonight while riding a scooter

Tonight while taking Pegwole, blogger from the Inked Geek Tech Report, home from my house via motor scooter we were stopped by the local police. This scooter is not rated for more than one passenger. The officer asked me to come to the car. He asked for my license, which if you know me personally is funny. Then he asked for any other ID, which I didn't have on me [mental note: I really don't have to show ID being a US citizen do I?]. I told him that I was going about 21 blocks and that Pegwole is legally blind (which he is). And then the typical name, address, make of scooter, year. So the cop decided that it really wasn't worth his trouble and told me to walk it until he was not in eyeshot. So I did and got him home. I really wish that I had a lifestreaming kit like Justine from Tasty Blog Snack so that I could have some cool video for you.

MPAA forces Ubuntu user to give up his freedom

Ars Technica reporter Jeremy Reimer, along with others are reporting that the Motion Picture Association of America has the ability to force someone to change operating systems. Basically the story goes some dude uploaded a movie and got bused, and part of his supervised release is that he has to have some special monitoring software running on his computer. Which will not run in anything other than Windows. Which is kinda bullshit, yeah the dude shouldn't be stealing movies (blah blah blah) but how bleeding hard is it to write a wine wrapper for your craptastic spyware. All in all this is pretty sucky.

And now quote of the week time...

'Jokes about "nobody is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to use Windows" aside, this case should be put up alongside the RIAA's suing of grandmothers and dead people as an example of the absurdity of current copyright law enforcement.'

White House Flouts NSA Subpoena Deadline, But Will Congress Fight Back?

White House Flouts NSA Subpoena Deadline, But Will
Congress Fight Back? (via eff.org)

Yesterday, the White House once again flouted Congress'
authority and failed to comply with Senate subpoenas
regarding the NSA's illegal domestic spying. In response,
Senator Patrick Leahy threatened contempt proceedings and
stated that the compliance deadline, which was already
delayed twice, would not be pushed back again.

That's certainly welcome news, but Congress can't let this
turn into yet another set of empty threats. Tough talk is
not enough -- after all, Congress has already made numerous
requests for critical information about the spying program
and let the President dodge them again and again. Instead
of forcing his hand, it practically rewarded his
evasiveness by capitulating to the Administration's
outrageous demands and radically expanding domestic spying
powers earlier this month.

Congress cannot allow itself to be pushed around any
longer. It needs to make good on its threats and pry the
truth out of the Administration using all available means,
including by holding it in contempt.

And that must only be a first step towards the ultimate
goal of stopping the President's abuse of power. Truth and
accountability for the warrantless wiretapping of Americans
should have come before any legislative changes were given
even the slightest consideration. Now Congress needs to
undo its mistake, starting with a repeal of the so-called
"Protect America Act," the Administration's FISA
"modernization" power grab.

Take action now and tell Congress to stop the warrantless
wiretapping:
http://action.eff.org/fisa

Warrantless Snooping -- What Happened, and How to Fix It":

Fixed

w00tz I fixed it!!! Take that fate, suck on that for a while!!! Thats all....

Welp, I screwed this one up

Hi there everybody. I have some bad news and some good news. Bad news as you can see I screw up the formatting of this site, I have 1337 css, and xhtml skillz. The good news is however that my posts have not gone with the formatting. So here is my plan. Find a buddy of mine (you know who you are) offer him a case of whatever the hell he wants. And get a new kick ass page up asap. I'm actually looking forward to soon having a whole new site set up, hosted by me and k00lness like that. So above mentioned friend call me at home or on my cell, and I may try to be in to talk to you tomorrow.

Why Geeks and Nerds Are Worth It...

This is not an original work, I wish it was, but it's not i got this from Craigslist (via StumbleUpon) this is reposted in it's entirety

In the wide world of dating, there are many options. Do you go for the flashy guy with the smooth smile, or the dude in the corner typing away on his laptop? The following are reasons why I think my fellow females should pay more attention to the quiet geeks and nerds, and less attention to the flashy boys.

1.) While geeks and nerds may be awkward, they’re well-meaning 9 out of 10 times. That smooth dude with the sly grin and the spider hands? Wonder what HIS intentions are... plus, I’ve never had a geek guy not call me when he said he would. Score major points THERE.

2.) They’re useful. In this tech-savvy world, it’s great to have a b/f who can make your laptop, desktop, and just about anything else that plugs into a wall behave itself.

3.) They’re more romantic than they’re given credit for. Ok true, their idea of romance might be to make up a spiffy web-page with all the reasons why they love you, with links to pics of you and sonnets and such... but hey. It lasts longer than flowers, plus you can show your friends.

4.) Due to their neglected status, there are plenty to choose from. You like ‘em tall and slender? There are plenty of geeks/nerds who are. You like ‘em smaller with more meat on their bones? Got that too.

5.) They’ve got brains. Come on now, how can intelligence be a bad thing?

6.) Most are quite good at remembering dates. Like birthdates and such, especially if they know it’ll make you happy. Due again to their neglected status, they’re more attentive than guys who “have more options”. Plus, with all that down time without a steady girlfriend, they’ll likely have mental lists of all the things they’d love to do once they GOT a girlfriend.

7.) Sex. Yep. Sex. I’m not really familiar with this myself, but I’ve friends who’ve been intimate with geek guys and it’s raves all around. They say a virgin wrote the Kama Sutra... all that time thinking about sex, imagining sex, dreaming about sex, (they are male after all) coupled with a desire to make you happy? Use your imagination.

8.) They’re relatively low-maintenance. Most can be fueled on pizza, Twinkies and Mt Dew. No complicated dinners needed here, so if you’re not the best cook, eh. Can you order a pizza?

9.) Most frequent bars as often as slugs frequent salt mines. You won’t have to worry much about your geek guy getting his “groove” on with club hotties because, frankly, he’ll be too busy rooting around under his computer wondering where that spare cable went. You won’t have to worry about him flirting with other women because, 9 out of 10 times, he’ll zip right by them in a perfect b-line towards the nearest electronics store. I’ve seen this happen.
Me: “Eww. Victoria Secret’s Models... They’re so skinny. How is that feminine? You can see her ribs!”
Geek Guy: “ooooooo...”
Me: “Hey!” *notices he is staring lustfully towards the computer store*
Geek Guy: “What?”
Me: “Never mind...”

10.) Although he may not want to go to every outing with you, you can arrange swaps, as in, you’ll go to his Gamer Con dressed as an elf princess if he’ll take you to the ballet. Plus, if he doesn’t want to go someplace with you, you won’t have to worry much about what he’s up to. You’ll probably come home to find him asleep on his keyboard in a sea of Mt. Dew cans with code blinking from the screen. It’s ok. He’s used to this. Just toss a blanket over him and turn out the light.

11.) His friends aren’t jerks. I can’t stress this enough. You’ll more likely get “Omg! A GIRL!! Can I see?!” than “Hey hot stuff back that ass up here and let me get some grub on...” They’re awkward geeks too and will, 9 times out of 10, treat you with the utmost respect and, more than likely, a note of awe. A cute girl picked one of their clan to date? It could happen to them! Hope! Drag some of your single girlfriends over, open up a pack of Mt. Dew, crack open the DnD set and get working. Nothing impresses geek guys more than a girl who can hack-n-slash (well ok maybe if she can code... a geek can dream).

12.) They’re rarely if ever possessive. They trust you, so you can be yourself around them. You like to walk around the house in a ratty t-shirt for comfort? He won’t care. He does too! They won’t get pissy if you don’t wear make-up or don’t want to bother primping your hair. If you gain a few pounds, they won’t try their best to make you feel like crap.

13.) They’re usually very well educated. Physics majors and the like. See #5. You won’t have to listen to him blathering on about his car (ok maybe a little), he’ll have loads of other interesting things to talk about. Politics, world events, how much the chicken burgers down at the local place rock, so long as you douse them in hot sauce...

14.) You’ll almost never have to hear, “Yaw dawg whazzap!!” plop out of their mouths. Unless it’s in jest. They spell properly, use correct punctuation, and are able to tell the difference between the toilet and the floor. They almost never get “wasted”, so you won’t have to worry about coming home to find him and his friends passed out on the floor amidst a pile of beer bottles. Mt. Dew cans, perhaps...

15.) And the final reason why geeks and nerds make great boyfriends: They actually give a damn about you. Not how you look (though that’s a plus), not how skinny you are, not how much make-up you primp yourself up with, but they like you for you. That kind of thing lasts longer than “DaMN baby you got a fine ass!!!” Believe me.

Game and Is this video me? Please tell me its not...

I'm thinking about starting a computer business, you know support and i have a plan to sell my own hardware. Now that we are in the webernet 2.0 we all know that the most important thing you can have is a cool name (some regular run-of-the-mill word where you drp th finl vowl[that's right tumblr I'm lookin' at you]) or a cool url (like del.icio.us). So the person who leaves the best idea in the comments will receive %1 of the first years income, and a free rig w/ a free year of service.

So Much For The Community

I can't believe this, I was on #ubuntu today and it was the worse thing I've ever seen from the community. #ubuntu is usually a really nice place, but there were some users just abusing the noobs. At one point this little girl joins and realizes that she is in the wrong channel and doesn't know how to get to the one she wants. Now mind you there are over 1000 people yapping in here and she doesn't understand the commands that are being thrown at her and then a couple of people start in on her about answering questions, I don't think she's even sure about how to use the keyboard let alone a bunch of IRC commands. Well I jumped this persons case about ripping on the n00bs and then we jump into #ubuntu-offtopic to finish our squabble.

You can get the #ubuntu log here and the #ubuntu-offtopic one here

and if you think that I am in the wrong please leave a comment

Another New Blog and Webcam Issues

Okay everyone last week I told you about Something Kinda Techy well on top of that I have started an Ubuntu Help Blog. All of the original content posted to this blog is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution, Share Alike 3.0 with the copyright holder being RLUG. There are going to be videos, screenshots, text walk-through's and how-to's. And we're starting from the beginning the first video is how to download and burn the Ubutnu ISO.

Now on to what is kinda crappy, ustream, the people who host the webcam (look to the right) are being flooded by users (including me) and the server keeps filling up I've noticed this happening around 6:00 PM EDT so if/when the cam goes down you know it's them and not me

Save Earthbound!!

Didactically speaking seminal evidence seems to explicate the fact that your repudiation of entrophy supports my theory of time-space synthesis. Of this I am irrefutably confident.

If you know wtf that's all about (or even if you don't) You should call Nintendo of America and tell them you want Mother 1 and 2 for the Game Boy Advance here in America.

the Number is 1-800-255-3700

If you don't get through try again, NOA thinks that this is gonna pass so please keep calling!

Why I'll Never Do Tech Work for Friends or Fam Again!!!

Ok don't get me wrong, I love helping people... I usually do it for free but when someone doesn't take the advise you give them or wants you to do illegal things for them that's where the buck stops.

Here is the story:

My girlfriend's sister and the rest of the household (from now on referred to as they) click on everything, and I mean everything. Then they are upset when they get malware. It's always some crap like but I'm running Norton... Well Norton doesn't help you when click on everything!!!

So they rely on the crappy restore partition that comes on HP machines. Great idea...NOT!!!11
This last time when I tried to restore from it, there was a system file corrupted, so it wouldn't restore. The best part is that they don't own an install disk. Weeeeeee!! So now I am expected to use a Windows disk that I don't own and install using a key that they don't own. Yeay Piracy!!

So I am no longer doing Windows support for people this is the last one. I'm going to install Windows XP Pro, Blink from eeye.com, and I'm turning on automatic update. After that they can either pay me per hour plus the cost of a Windows XP disk (legally obtained), or goto Linux, because I'm not dealing with this shit anymore.

Under Re-construction

OK everyone, I'm REALLY starting to hate the whole center alignment thing I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. AHHHH!!!!!111one

My template is here if you would care to help me, all I'm looking to do is use that space that is to the left of everything.

Updates to the blog and how I hope last.fm survives the Content Royalty Board

If you look at the side bar you can see what I've been listening to. This is because of a last.fm plug-in to Rythmbox. I think its only the radio part but still that is sweet. I'm still learning about last.fm and the Rythmbox plug-in. If there is a way to get my locally listened to stuff to show someone let me know. And I hope that the CRB fails miserably in their attempt to kill internet radio.

Please for the love of god keep 2.0 on the web
